At Red Rock, our Intensive Outpatient Program (IOP) provides effective, flexible treatment for addiction and mental health through our values of community, personalized care, and holistic health. Our IOP celebrates the progress individuals have already made in recovery and helps them to develop skills to sustain it further.

Our IOP is structured, nonresidential treatment for addiction and mental health disorders. Unlike residential programs, individuals in our program don’t stay overnight at our center. Instead, they join sessions on-site but return home afterwards.

Our IOP is an intermediate form of care — a stepping stone between residential, Partial Hospitalization Programs (PHP), or weekly therapy sessions. It can be a preferred format for individuals who have work and family responsibilities.

What Is An Intensive Outpatient Program?

IOPs offer a higher level of care than weekly therapy. They suit individuals whose symptoms are serious but don’t require a 24/7 residential program or PHP. Treatment takes place daily at a healthcare facility, but attendees don’t stay overnight. People who are able to live at home but still need regular, structured care benefit from Intensive Outpatient Programs.

At Red Rock Recovery, our IOP runs 3-4 days a week from Monday to Thursday and features:

  • 9 hours of services a week in three-hour sessions for as many weeks as necessary
  • A combination of evidence-based therapy, group therapy, and psychiatric care
  • Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT) and Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT)
  • Holistic activities, such as mindfulness and yoga and healthy coping skills

What Are The Benefits of an IOP?

IOPs have many benefits, including:

  • Clinically-proven care for addiction and mental health
  • Independent living while in the program
  • Discreet treatment
  • More affordable than inpatient programs

From a clinical perspective, IOPs are proven forms of treatment. One study found that groups in outpatient programs had higher response rates to treatment for depression than groups in inpatient programs [1]. Other research shows that IOPs have higher retention rates than alternative program types [2].

IOPs allow individuals to access high-quality care while still being able to continue their personal lives, maintain personal support systems, and gradually build a stronger sense of independent living. Plus, they can apply skills learned in IOPs directly in their daily lives.

Some individuals appreciate that IOPs feel more discreet because they can attend sessions during the day and leave at night. In many instances, IOP is more affordable than an inpatient program.

What’s Different About Red Rock Recovery’s IOP Approach?

Community-Focused Care

At Red Rock Recovery, we know that recovery doesn’t happen in a silo; it requires multifaceted, consistent support. That’s why our IOP is oriented around building and maintaining community: we offer family and group therapy as part of our program to connect individuals with others who are struggling with addiction and mental health.

We believe that sharing stories and exchanging coping mechanisms gives individuals hope and can strengthen healing journeys. The focus on community means program attendees are more resilient to deal with negative and isolating thoughts that can arise during recovery.

Our approach is rooted in research, too. Studies show that social support is correlated with better treatment retention, lower rates of relapse, and improved quality of life for individuals with addiction and substance use disorders [3].

Tailored Treatment Plans

There’s no one size fits all for outpatient programs. At Red Rock Recovery, we personalize all treatment to each person, ensuring that individual needs are met. We consider addiction and mental health history alongside current goals on a case-by-case basis, and we provide the care that best aligns.

After the first call, we work with each individual to create a comprehensive, unique treatment plan.

Holistic Health Activities

Recovery isn’t just overcoming addiction or learning to manage a mental health disorder. The physical, emotional, spiritual, and social elements of health matter. We nurture these through a range of holistic activities such as mindfulness and yoga.

We encourage our program attendees to participate in holistic activities to focus their energy and tend to their mind, body, and soul. The aim is to help individuals see themselves in a different way and to form a sustainable lifestyle that isn’t confined by addiction or mental health disorders.
