It takes courage to seek help and the common anxiety surrounding detox (withdrawal management). While detox can be intimidating, understanding the structured, medically supervised process at Red Rock Recovery Center, a modern Colorado facility, can provide relief and set the stage for successful long-term treatment.

Located just 20 minutes west of the Denver Metro area, our 7-acre mountain Basecamp campus offers a peaceful and private setting to safely manage withdrawal symptoms and clinically stabilize to prepare for the next phase of treatment

You can expect a medically supervised, highly structured short-term stay focused for detox treatment (longer for follow-on residential treatment) on safety, withdrawal management, and planning the next phase of care [1]. Our approach combines evidence-based medicine and therapy with a holistic respect for the individual’s well-being [2].

In this article, I outline what’s involved with detoxing at a Colorado detox and rehab center.

Pre-Admission: The Foundation for a Safe Detox

The process may begin before your start date with a detailed medical and psychological evaluation (often via phone). This is to understand the substance(s) used, duration, dosage, co-occurring mental health conditions, and overall physical health. Based on this, a fully personalized detox plan is developed [3].

If the assessment is done on arrival, bring your insurance information and dress comfortably. Our facility provides a safe, controlled environment.

The Three Core Phases of Medical Detox

Detox is usually 3–7 days, depending on substances, amounts, co‑occurring conditions, and whether polysubstance use is involved. There are three phases to detox [4].

Phase 1: Intake & Stabilization (Day 1)

  • Warm, Clinical Welcome: Arrival, settling in, meeting the staff (nurses, counselors, medical directors).
  • In-Depth Medical Evaluation: Our staff will complete a medical and psychosocial evaluation: physical exam, substance use history, medical/psychiatric history, current meds, and vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, temperature, and O2 level).

We may do basic lab work and screenings to assess liver function, infection risk, and pregnancy (when relevant) and to guide safe medication protocols.

A physician or other trained provider then writes a detox order set, including monitoring frequency, comfort meds (as needed), and any assessments such as the Clinical Institute Withdrawal Assessment for Alcohol (CIWA) or Clinical Opiate Withdrawal Scale (COWS).
  • The Onset of Withdrawal: Monitoring begins immediately as the body starts to adjust.

Phase 2: Active Medical Management and Monitoring (Primary Detox Days)

24/7 Medical Supervision

  • The cornerstone of safety. Nursing or medical staff monitor vital signs (blood pressure, heart rate, and temperature) and manage symptoms.

Medication-Assisted Treatment (MAT)

If required, MAT begins as soon as possible.

  • Purpose: The objective is not to substitute one addiction for another but to safely alleviate withdrawal symptoms, reduce cravings, and prevent dangerous complications (e.g., seizures, DTs).
  • On-Site or On-Call Support: Our medical detox program provides 24/7 nursing with on-call or on-site prescribers to manage withdrawal and any complications.
  • Vital signs and symptoms: These are checked regularly using standardized scales; medication doses are adjusted as your symptoms peak and then taper.
  • Medications: Depending on the substance, you may receive medications to reduce withdrawal and cravings. For example, buprenorphine for opioids and benzodiazepines or anticonvulsants for alcohol may be used. Symptomatic meds like clonidine, antiemetics, or non-opioid analgesics may also be used. They are always administered by medical professionals.
  • Symptom Management: We will provide an honest but reassuring description of potential withdrawal symptoms (anxiety, nausea, insomnia, and mood swings). We explain how your symptoms are treated with both medication and supportive care.
  • The Colorado Difference: We integrate complementary support from day one, such as hydration, light nutrition, and calming environments.

The Environment

We have a quiet, inpatient setting with a bed, meals tailored to support nutrition, and encouragement to hydrate, rest, and move as tolerated.

We also offer light programming even in detox: brief check‑ins with a therapist, psychoeducation, and optional groups or holistic activities (e.g., relaxation, yoga, music, or art) when you are medically stable enough to participate.

Phase 3: Emotional Support and Mental Health Care (The Final Days)

Shifting Focus: As the body stabilizes, the focus shifts from pure medical management to psychological preparation. Staff are trained to manage co‑occurring mental health conditions, such as anxiety and depression. They may adjust or initiate psychotropic medications as appropriate while observing their interactions with withdrawal medications.

Peer support: We offer on‑site AA/NA or similar groups. This provides early exposure to recovery communities while you are still in a medically supported setting.

Introduction to Therapy: Detox often surfaces anxiety, feelings of unease, irritability, and previously numbed emotions. Access to therapists or counselors to assist you is built in. You will have initial meetings with counselors and an introduction to group therapy sessions with peers in detox.

Treatment Planning Collaboration: Staff works with you to plan the next step—typically transitioning to a residential or intensive outpatient program within the same facility or network.

Transition Preparation: Detox is the first step and is not a standalone treatment; discharge planning typically begins at admission.

Before you leave detox, the team will help you transition into the next level of care: residential, PHP/IOP, or outpatient with MAT and therapy, plus linkage to community resources and aftercare.

You will leave with a written plan that may include follow‑up appointments, safety planning, relapse‑prevention strategies, and recommendations tailored to your locale and insurance constraints.

The Colorado Advantage: Holistic Support in a Healing Environment

Beyond Medicine

You will be able to use the healing qualities of our natural setting and possibly certain holistic practices during detox.

Integrated Therapies

These include:

  • Nutritional Support: Chef-prepared meals to rebuild health.
  • Mindfulness and Relaxation: Guided meditation, breathwork.
  • Gentle Somatic (Body) Therapies: Yoga or other methods can help with anxiety and pain management.
  • Connection to Nature: The therapeutic benefit of mountain views, natural light, and serene environments, which are hallmark features of our Colorado detox center.

Common Fears Addressed

  • “Will it be painful?” (The tradeoff is between managed discomfort vs. unmanaged suffering).
  • “Is it just a ‘drying out’ period?” (No, it’s the first stage of integrated treatment).
  • “What about privacy?” (We are HIPAA-compliant and provide discreet care).

Detox is a temporary, medically supported process designed for safety and comfort. It is the brave first step that clears the path for the deeper therapeutic work to come. The goal is not just to get sober but to begin healing.
